Advocates

Young Workers Centre operates a community legal centre providing employment law assistance to young people working in Victoria. We offer volunteer placement opportunities to law students from eligible universities. Our volunteer advocates are an integral part of our centre.

What will you do as an advocate?

    • Interview clients and provide advice under the supervision of the Centre’s solicitors
    • Draft correspondence and court documents
    • Research and prepare briefs for casework and conciliation
    • Prepare wage theft calculations
    • Shadow solicitors in legal proceedings (where possible)

How do I apply?

Young Workers Centre only accepts applications through university placement programs. We currently have partnerships with University of Melbourne, Australian Catholic University, La Trobe University, Deakin University, Victoria University, RMIT, and Swinburne University. We suggest contacting your university’s placement coordinators in the first instance.

We can only offer placements to students who are obtaining university credit. Placement length varies depending on your university’s requirements.

We operate three placement periods throughout the year:

Summer Semester – late November – late February, two days per week;

Semester 1 – late February – June, one day per week; and

Semester 2 – late July – November, one day per week.

We offer remote or on-site supervision depending upon student needs, with the capacity to revert to fully remote supervision pending Covid restrictions.

We strongly encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We strive to be a safe and inclusive practice. Please let us know if you would like to discuss any accessibility concerns.

For any questions about our placement program, please contact Leon Harper, Solicitor, [email protected]
